SALEM, Ore. --

A man's leg was severed by a freight train late Sunday night in Salem, police said.

The southbound Union Pacific train ran over the 51-year-old man just south of McGilchrist Street, according to the Salem Police Department.

Lt. David Okada said the man was sleeping with one leg over the tracks when the train approached. The train's engineer applied emergency braking and sounded the horn, but the man did not respond, and the train severed his leg between the ankle and the knee, police said.

Paramedics rushed the man to Salem Hospital as a trauma patient. Okada said police have not been able to verify the man's identity or his address.

The train was traveling at about 35 mph when the engineer spotted the man on the tracks.

The crash closed McGilchrist Street at Pringle and 16th streets to allow for an investigation by Union Pacific officials.
