Believe it or not, CONTOMS was originally begun by the U.S. Park Police. If you have access to any JEMS (Journal of EMS) back issues, they ran a very good article about them this summer. You may want to check with any local SWAT and/or SERT teams to ask them whether or not they utilize Tactical Medics, and maybe you can talk to one if they do. By the way CONTOMS stands for COunter Narcotics/Tactical Operations Medical Support.

Hope the info helps.

CONTOMS is run by the US Univ of Health Sci located in Bethesda MD. They have a very descriptive web site at http://usuhs.mil/ccr/course.html. I know several SWAT medics who have attended. They look at it like the SEAL training school for medics. You MUST have a Police or SWAT team sponsor to get in.

Their EMT-T curriculum looks like this:

Students graduating from the EMT-Tactical school will be able to integrate the following skills into
their agencies' standard operations:

Assess and plan for preventive medicine needs in sustained operations.
Provide preventive medical care in sustained operations.
Recognize and treat unique wounding patterns resulting from deliberate interpersonal aggression.
Use medical care skills that are appropriate in hostile and austere environments.
Explain medical and physiological parameters that lead to performance decrement and implement
plans that minimize those effects.
Develop and apply injury control strategies.
Access and analyze medical intelligence and execute a medical threat assessment.
Apply special law enforcement principles to the delivery of medical care.

The basic provider (EMT-T) curriculum includes the following subjects:
Care Under Fire
Hostage Survival
Medicine Across the Barricade
Medical Aspects of Extended Operations
Wound Ballistics, Weapons and Their Effects
Medical Threat Assessment and Medical Intelligence
Clinical Forensic Medicine and Evidence Preservation
Toxic Hazards-Identification, Risks and Management
Special Equipment and Medical Kits; Design Selection and Deployment

Several hands-on laboratories are included in the rigorous training schedule:

Physical Assessment Under Sensory Deprivation/Overload Conditions
Medical Threat Assessment Group Exercise
Advanced MedicoTactical Techniques
Field Expedient Decontamination
New Technologies for Safe Searches
Management of Dental Injuries

The week of training culminates in a Field Training Exercise {FTX} which provides the students with an opportunity to integrate and implement all of the skills learned in the classroom. Topics addressed include:
"Officer Down" Rescue & Extraction
Hostage Survival
Medicine Across the Barricade
Aeromedical Evacuation
Medical Management of Clandestine Drug Laboratory Raids
Safe Search Techniques
Remote Physical Assessment
