We recently placed an order for a Navistar unit with a box built by PL Custom of NJ. After doing some research, the Navistar is the only way to go. The life expectency of the medium duty chassis is 15 years, vs. the 7-8 years of the Ford. The cost of the medium duty is a little more, but will pay for itself through decreased maintence cost, longivity. I vote for the navistar. We also are buying a Type I on a Ford F-350 chassis, its goin to be a nice unit to. The cost of both was $160K for the Navistar, and $110K for the Ford. We beefed up the Navistar, big motor, heavy duty trans, etc.

We are running a Ford F-250 with a 7.3 litre Diesel Navistar engine. It's in a twin stretcher config in a locally built (Brisbane) modular body.
We can't ask for anything better. Good power (we are in a mountainous area) and good working space.

350 or 450 Ford, go with the F series.Much more easy and cheaper to work on.

We've had Ford E350, Navistar 4700LP and currently a Freightliner FL50. Both the 4700 and FL50 were/are good heavy duty rigs. Very little if any repairs over 5 years/60K miles. Hint: Buy the biggest engine you can get.
