Airbag deployed crashes

In crashes where airbags deploy, do the airbags tend to push the victims downward in such a way that they suffer ankle and leg problems?

I thought I read this somewhere.

Last night, in an airbag deployed crash, the driver suffered a severed ankle. I'm trying to figure out if it was snapped due to his body being driven into the firewall.

More than likely the patient tensed up upon impact and caused most of the damage to his legs and ankle when they struck the firewall. If you find out any more information about airbag effects to the lower extremities, please repost and tell me.
