I am interested in any departments that deploy EMS units on bicycle. I work in a medium size city with many special events with crowds in excess of 100,000. Please submit any information you may have or any departments that you are aware of that utilize bicycle units.
Thank You

During the 4th of July festivities, there is a group of EMS personnel who ride donated bikes from Kmart. Nothing special. carry basic supplies and wear dept. t-shirts and/or orange vests.

Let me know if you want anymore info.

In Delaware, The Kent County Paramedics have a bycicle unit, and I believe that Sussex county is working on the same to handle all the beach resort traffic during the summer.

The EMS agency that I work per-diem for has a bike team. They are used for special event coverage. Been in service for about 4-5 years now. Send me an e-mail and I can put you in touch with someone there. I know they sent a few people to a police bike team training school before they were allowed to do events.

I would also like to get some information about EMS bicycle units. I think that Bike units could be very helpful in a first response role in major cities, and at special events coverage. bikes are great for getting through crowds and also through high traffic areas.

Baltimore city employs EMS bike teams. You can try going to www.ipmba.org (http://www.ipmba.org) for info. I spoke with them at EMS Today and they were informative and very friendly.

My department has operated an EMS Bike Team for a few years now. We provide mobile EMS coverage, public bicycle safety education and public relations during large scale events, triathalons, March of Dimes walks, 4th of July events, parades, etc.

We have 10 bikes that were donated to the department by a concerned citizen that liked the idea of a bike team (we publisized the formation of the team in the local paper.) We also have fanny packs, bike racks, and some other things that we've accumulated from Galls, different EMS suppliers and the Park Service. Visit our web site at <a href="http://www.crs75.org/bikepat.htm">http://www.crs75.org/bikepat.htm</a> for some info on our bike team and some of their Standard Operating Guidelines. Also, if you email specific questions to me, I can get them to the guys in charge of our bike team and get answers for you.

The fire department in my town has an excelently trained and well used bicycle paramedic team. They are used mainly at the Western Washington Fair (one of the largest fairs in WA). Here is their website: http://www.ci.puyallup.wa.us/fire/info/services/bert_01.htm

I am employed by UMDNJ/EMS/CAMDEN. We deliver BLS to the city of Camden NJ. Are big brother dept. is the City of Newark. We both have Bike units. In the Camden the are the first response units for the Tweeter Center (which is concert venue) parking lots. Bike team was also involved in OPSAIL 2000 and The Rep. Nat. Convention last summer. To get information go to UMDNJ website and look for Ems. You will be able to get email and phone numbers of who to contact. www.umdnj.edu (http://www.umdnj.edu)

The city I work has three big events each year and there was some thought at putting EMS bicycle units into service. I was a big fan of doing this!

One of our chiefs voted it down because he didn't believe we would be able to get through the crowds on the bike. I thought he was crazy until the first night I worked out there. The bikes would have been useless for us. We have 6 teams of two that walk around and 1 guy that is stationed w/ a mule that can come in to transport someone to a waiting ambulance if necessary. Just something to think about!
