This is for all of you that work on a full time service. How many of you have problems getting "burned" or getting off on time? At one of my services we have had many problems getting off on time and we are looking for ideas to help get rid of this problem. I realize that we will never be able to fully get rid of the problem, but we can try to make it a little better. Any help would be appreciated!

five mins till you log off, and then BAM! A late job.
you need to work in a good place w/ better people who will look out for you, and also keep an eye on the clock to make sure you don't get stuck on a late one, but are also not afraid or too lazy to step up and take the assignment(s) from you. There are loop holes you can use, (don't know your situation), but in NYC if you say you have a better ETA, or are closer to tht assignment - you get it (regardless of how long it would take you to get there).
Yup, I'm still looking for the ideal station as well.

I'm not really sure there is much you can do, unless you varied the times that everyone gets off and didn't have shift change for everyone at the same time. That wouldn't really work to well either though. It's just part of the job.
Here we all get off at 8 am when the new shift comes in. I'm pretty sure it is like that a lot of places. If we get a call at 7:50 and the guys coming in aren't ready yet, we gotta go. Around here though we try and look out for each other. We are cross trained (FF/Paramedic) so say its a rescue call that comes in at 7:50 and one of the rescue guys had plans or something he had to do right after shift change, an engine guy would take it for him. If it's a fire or something, well, we're just SOL.
