A couple of years ago we had a ems run, a reported heroin overdose. When we got there, the guy was in full arrest and the girlfriend was doing cpr. We took over, inserted an opa and started bagging him, doing compressions and hooked up our defibrillator. While we were analyzing, the guy opened his eyes, sat up, pulled the opa out of his mouth and said
"****ing A, that was a rush!" The paramedics and BLS crew arrived, the guy ended up refusing treatment. He moved away shortly afterwards, but it was definitely one of the weirdest medicals we ever went on!

I was on a call for a 20 something year old male with seizures. It was a rural address so it took us awhile to get there. When I walked in the house I found the young man on the bed unresponsive with his father sitting on top of him slapping him and yelling at him to breath. I got the father off of him and we began to go to work. The guy would lay there unreponsive but breathing good on his own. He would then tighten up all of his muscles and go into a fetal position, stop breathing and seize. It was very strange. At one point he had stopped breathing for a longer than normal period of time. We tried to bag him but as soon as it touched his face he grabbed it and threw it accross the room. According to family he had no medical history and no drug use. But he had been drinking all afternoon. I was convinced that it was some form of drugs. It was my turn to drive so I questioned the girlfriend all the way to the hospital about any possible drug use or anything like that. She would never give me a clear answear. Several days after the call we heard back from the hospital that they couldnt find anything wrong with him. As far as I know he has never had another one.

Is Lt. Gonzo the same as our CaptGonzo (just younger)? I'm assuming as much. Sorry to be off topic.

One night at like 3am we had a call very simalar to Rolandthunder's. I run in a rural area and we all run from home because we dont have a bay establised, just a garage. I arrived on scene first to find a 26 yr old female who had looked liked she was seizing. She would clench her jaw hold her breath and tighten every muscle in her body. Mean while the alcohol she had drank seem to be coming back up. While doing a sternum rub and opening her mouth she begain to gasp for air. This went on for the 20 minutes i was on scene and then the whole transport (about 30 minutes to the closest hospital running code 3). While on scene we started to bag her and thought about an OPA. She was to in and out of it so we thought she would puke even more with it in, so the crew broke out and NPA in the rig on the way in. Apparently as they were inserting it she opened her eyes yanked it out and threw it. Once she was at the hospital, she started to go into one of her "seizures" the Nurse looked at her and told her firmly to stop, and she did. I still think that since we were suctioning any ways that the OPA should have been attempted. It would bring her out of it real fast. If she wanted a ride to the ER all she had to do was ask, it would have made our jobs so much easier.

We had a teenager that would always head to the school RN office and fake a Sz. She had us fooled for the first couple calls but we caught on quick. We had a EMT-P student with us one time we saw her and I told the student to watch and learn. While standing over the pt I told the school RN that usually those that have a Sz are incontinent of urine and as soon as I said that the pt urinated. We could have kept going with things that pt's do in a Sz but we decided to stop there. Once the pt woke up the student asked the pt ever so innocently why she had gone to such extent just to get out of school. The pt politely replied that she did not like school but she has a Sz Hx and frequently has Sz in the presence of bright lights. Still confused the student stated that with his short time in EMS he has never seen such a poor performance in faking a Sz and could not believe that she had wet her pants just to get out of school. The pt did not say another word for the rest of the transport and eventually admitted to the ED staff that this was not a real Sz. I did have to talk with the Student about interactions with pt's, real c/c or not but could not do it with a straight face. Gotta love those that abuse the system, keeps each shift from becoming boring.

Ever since I have gotten my Medic numbers, OB calls have scared the **** out of me. I have had 2 deliveries in 2 1/2 years as a medic, one was no problem, the other one was a nuchal cord 25 miles from the closest hospital. Baby came out fine, but that was quite an adrenaline rush, and that was the most scared I have ever been in EMS. That is my background with OB, leading up to this call......

We were dispatched to the housing projects for an OB call "pt states her baby's bag is hanging out". I am thinking it is a placenta previa, not too much of a problem. We get there, she is a primagravida, get her on the stretcher and in the truck. I did a quick assessment, and pulled out the CONDOM!!!!!!! We have already gone enroute to the hospital, and the backup crew is coming in to the station. This is on a thursday, and she told me the last time she had intercourse was the previous Sunday. She quickly told me she did not want to be transported, and she was very embarrassed. The funniest part was when we pulled back into the projects. All her family mobbed the ambulance wondering what was going on. She would not tell them, and I told them I could not tell them, due to HIPPA laws. I have been nicknamed Trojan Man since then. Strangest call of my life.
