Is anyone aware of any colleges or universities in the US that operate volunteer organizations that assist campus safety professionals with medical and fire calls? I know that many schools do operate their own EMS, but how about first responders, such as EMTs or firefighters that would respond directly to the scene on campus? My college does have "student police" but I was hoping to start something similar that involved assisting campus police at medical and fire calls. Any input would be appreciated.

This is the site for college and university response teams. Great info here. There's a listing of participating department web sites, as well as sample SOG's and FAQ's.

Cornell University in Upstate NY has a student run organization. It is all volunteer and they respond to any EMS call on the campus. They are headed by an advisor, which is a staff member of the university. The unit falls under the Environmental Health & Safety Dept. They run their operations ( I Believe ) on student fees. If you need any Info feel free to contact me.

The web page given earlier is a great resource for campus based EMS programs - if you have any more deatiled questions post them here - I helped to start the group at villanova University about 11 years ago and served as the advisor for a time.

Franklin Pierce College in Rindge, NH runs their own EMT Sqaad. They are first repoonse to any medical call on-campus at night and on the weekends and make the determination for Tx or not. We also run a small Fire Brigade that supports the town's Fire Dept. They are first response along with a town FD Officer to all fire alarms and other fire calls on campus.

UCLA has campus EMS. It is totally student staffed, not volunteer, and is the 911 provider for all of campus and some surrounding areas of Westwood. We are based out of the police station (UCPD) and are officially PD employees. ALS support comes from nearby LAFD stations, and I believe UCLA EMS is one of the busiest campus EMS in the country. Check it out at http://www.ems.ucla.edu

Clark University has one of the oldest first responder/EMT squads in the country. The are apart of the Univ. Police Dept., on-call during the school year 24/7, and have a paging/toning/portable comm. system. They determine the need for tx., file and maintain call hx. and develope a week dedicated to EMS for faculty and students. It is a volunteer squad.

Hampden-Sydney College, in Virginia, has the benefit of having a county FD adjacent to campus. The H-SVFD is staffed by community members, faculty, staff and mostly students and responds to any emergency call on campus as well as our initial response area in the county. We operate as a fully functional FD and as a First Responder agency. The College supports us a great deal with financial assistance and fund raising opportunities, but we are still a county agency.

Check out Worcester Polytech's EMS website. We operate a volunteer first responder squad. We assist the campus police with medical calls, as well as provide training for students on campus. Coverage is continued 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the school year.

jr95,

i see that you are from new jersey. what school are you looking to start this service. i go to montclair state university and we have a full blown ems for the thousands of visiters students and faculty. we were student created and student staffed on a volunteer basis with some perks such as being paid for athletic stand-by's and free housing in a campus-resident emt program. we are also in the process of working out a mutual aid program to provide service on a back-up basis for the 3 towns that the campus is located in. if you have any question feel free to post them or im me

Here in Minnesota, we do have an Emergency Response ambulance for the University of Minnesota campuses, both the East and West banks. This sounds very large, but they have a campus in both of the Twin Cities, Minneapolis and St. Paul. They have been running for many years and work with the local ambulance services. They are allowed to transport non-critical patients, however becuase of transport times and the minimal staffing there...they tend to call in another ambulance service to transport the patients. Hope this helps! ;)

Hi there,
I'm a supervisor and an EMT instructor at the University of Minnesota. This organization has been around since about 1968. It originally used Student and Alumni First Aiders and first aid merit badge holding boy scouts. They would cover Gopher games and other U related events. If someone was needing help, they would signal for back-up by using flags to direct that help in. The Pt. would then be taken to a first aid room and left with someone for the duration of the event or untill the U of M Police ambulance showed up or they got a ride to whereever. The Flags went away and the U of M Ham radio club (I'm not sure which was worse- Geeky radio guys with portable ham radio's bigger than a lifepak 12 or prepubescent boys with flags.) So the radio club came in and supplied a radio team member with each crew. This allowed us to contact each other. Oh the joy. Eventually the U's Finest (and they are)came up with with the funding for new radios and we got the old one's. We now train First Responders, EMT's, Sky Warn, CPR and a few others. Now we cover large events on Campus and assist Hennipen County medics on special events through the city. We're staffed by Students and few non-student vollies. I've been around a day or two, If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Mark

FYI... Oswego State University in Oswego, NY, is the home of the nations's first student-run volunteer ambulance corps. The Student Association Volunteer Ambulance Corps (SAVAC), was started in 1972, and continues to provide 24/7 BLS coverage to the campus and surrounding communities.

We just bought a brand-new 2001 Braun Chief XL... pics are on our website at www.oswego.edu/~savac (http://www.oswego.edu/~savac)

Feel free to contact us through our web page if you'd like more information about SAVAC or beginning your own corps!

Be safe!

John Carroll University in Cleveland just started a new First Responder program called JCU*EMS. We have yet to begin operations yet, but eventually will run first response to all medical emergencies on the campus of 4,500 students and begin initial size-up and treatment. So far, the members have been CPR-AED certified and will begin First Responder certification in early January, at the start of the second semester. Training is free trough South Pointe Hospital here in Cleveland with the option to get free EMT certification. All members must at least receive First Resonder cert. I plan to go all the way through EMT training. Any questions or helpful hints on how to get the program running would be greatly appreciated. Just drop me an email.

I'm a paramedic and I attend a four-year university full-time. I had no idea what type of EMS system the university utilized until I dislocated my knee. Illinois State University HAS no university-based EMS response team. I waited approximately 15 minutes for the local fire department to get in their ambulance from across town and navigate their way to my location on the fourth floor. The department has a tremendously high call volume due to responding to false fire alarms in the dorms in addition to taking calls within the community. They average approximately 17 calls a day for a BLS department, with the contract-holding ALS private ambulance responders averaging about the same. I feel that having even a BLS EMS response team within the university is an excellent idea in terms of response time and knowing the university layout.

Well, I posted something about it about 3 months ago, but JCU*EMS is soon to be up and running. 16 students finished First Responder training, includsing myself last week. As of today, I am certified. (I also started my EMT-B course today... moving up the ladder very fast.) So we have 16 certified FR' and 12 EMT-B students (4 of whom started today and are already FR's and 8 who started in early January and will be done in late March. My class will be done in mid-May, so we will have 12 EMT-B and 12 FR's... thats a nice mix. We also have an EMT-I and 2 Paramedic's who are previously trained. We hope to begin running calls March 25. I am one of 9 supervisors, and am 1 of 5 executive supervisors, meaning we have duties covering equipment, scheduling, training, PR/membership and conduct. If you have any questions, feel free to email me.

This is not only possible but has been done and many of the on-campus ambulance services you see today started as a first responder service. I would strongly suggest you go talk with the ambulance service administrator or president of the ambulance service that response to the campus they probably would love the opportunity to have a first response on your campus. This doesn't really have anything to do with the security/police dept. on campus and really should stay seperate. As far as fire goes I believe you should go talk to chief of local dept. It maybe a good idea to join local department then they may not care if there is a call on campus if you go directly to the scene. But they may have liability issues if you are not part of department.

Va Tech in Blacksburg, VA and Radford University in Radford, VA, both have campus squads. They are both ran by students. Tech has EMT's, Cardiac Techs, and Paramedics. I am a career medic, but help Tech Rescue with all home football games. They are very professional, and they work very hard to provide a quality service to the campus of Va Tech. They take their jobs seriously and it is an honor to work with them on gameday.

Tech has a webpage and the link is:

http://filebox.vt.edu/org/vtrescue/

I'm sure Radford has a site also, but not sure what the link is.
