Our EMS service area covers over 17,000 square miles of East Texas and we use any one of 8 separate services. Aside from our own 2 helicopters we use services out of Dallas, which has ships in several locations, Fort Worth, Houston, Texarkana, another out of Tyler, Shreveport Louisiana, and one in the Lufkin area.

All fly with a Paramedic/Nurse crew configuration.

Our primary is New England Life Flight out of the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, about 10 minutes flight time for them to get to us. They use a BK-117. One Nurse and an Emergency Medicine resident usually on a short leash held by said nurse. It is quite fun to watch a new doc fumble his way around sometimes. :D

If they are busy we usually get Boston Medflight out of Bedford (Near Concord) MA, about the same flight time (They also fly a brandidy new BK-117), or their other helicopter out of Plymouth, near Cape Cod (They have a Dauphin). One Nurse and one Paramedic.

If they are busy as well we get LifeStar out of Hartford Connecticut, about 20 minutes flight time. They fly two BK-117s and are staffed by an RN and a Respiratory Therapist.

In a REALLY BAD pinch we would get DHART out of Dartmouth Hitch**** in Dover, NH or Albany Medflight. In six years I have not even seen either of these two fly near here. It is a VERY long flight to get them and we usually would only see them if they happened to be flying into Boston.

There is a recurring rumor about the Massachusetts State Police trying to get a flight program going for EMS but I don't see it happening. With Medflight and Lifeflight running, I do not think that there would be enough business to substantiate then all.

Mercy Flight of Western NY uses a Eurocopter BO-105, and is based out of Olean, 40-45 min flight time, or Blasdell, 15 min flight time. Generally we will put the helicopter on an airborn standby if we perceive the MOI to be significant, or if it is recommended by dispatch. Mercy Flight has 3 helicopters available for transports. The third aircraft is based out of Batavia (40-45 min flight time) and is a Bell Long Ranger run by the NY State Police. The Olean and Blasdell based aircraft have a medical crew consisting of a Paramedic and Flight nurse.
Flight time to closest Level I trauma center is 7-10 minutes.

We have two choices:

Careflight from Miami Valley Hospital. Web site: http://www.miamivalleyhospital.com/caref.htm. They fly with 2 nurse/paramedics. Both birds are Dauphins (same as what you see the Coast Guard use). They're a bit further away from me, but their birds fly faster and in worse weather than our other choice. Miami Valley is a Level I trauma center. One bird is 7x24 and is based at the hospital in Dayton. Their second bird is 7x12 (12:00-00:00) and based southwest of Dayton at a small regional airport.

University AirCare from University Hospital in Cincinnati. Web site: http://www.universityaircare.org. They fly with a flight nurse and an emergency medicine resident. Like others have said, early in each academic year, it's the flight nurses watching over the residents. University Hospital is a Level I trauma center. One bird is 7x24 and is based at the hospital in Cincinnati. Their 2nd bird is based north of Cincinnati at a small regional airport. (can you say they're competing with CareFlight - Paul's editorial comment: that's sad - they should be concentrating on Kentucky, since there's no other birds until you get to Lexington). They fly a BK-117 and an older bird.

Both provide great service. One thing that's nice about having a doc fly in is that they can pronounce in the field. I've run scenes where I called both - they played nice together.
