Just venting some steam, my cyber-friends....

As many of you know, my paying job is a dispatcher for Hillcrest AirEvac in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

I just got back from a general staff meeting that was called at 1600 yesterday. Management assured us "it wasn't bad". Those of us that are pessimists--er, realists --thought that management's definition of 'bad' was likely different than our definition of 'bad'.

We were right. :(

Turns out Hillcrest hospital is doing away with it's air ambulance division (read: AirEvac) as of January 13, 2003.

The management lingo flew across the room like it was some ESPN2 Xtreme sport, and the VP that had the most points got keys to the executive washroom! What it boiled down to was--anyone? anyone?--money.

Hillcrest spends $2 million a year on AirEvac, and has worked a deal with AirEvac Lifeteam based in West Plain, Missouri to be their "preferred provider".

What that breaks down to is this: Hillcrest doesn't spend $2 million a year, Lifeteam puts a base in Tulsa and transport the patients and accepts the financial liability. Shrewd from a management standpoint, I guess, but a crappy Christmas bonus for us employees.

To Lifeteam's credit, they brought representatives out to the meeting (not exactly a "friendly" environment) and offered everyone a job, from mechanics to medical crews to pilots.

Too bad they do central dispatching from West Plains, Missouri and I live 45 minutes west of Tulsa, Oklahoma. For those of you who don't want to look it up on a map, that's about a 5 hour commute for ol' SilverCity4.

So...I'm still planning on starting Paramedic school in January, but I guess I won't be working part-time at AirEvac as planned.

Anybody got some good recipes for Roman Noodles and Spam?

:D

Merry Christmas! You've been Scrooged!

Last year had the fun of the company deciding to move to Florida from NJ. They were nice and offered some of us jobs down there, unfortunately, kids just starting school, just built new house, etc. made the decision pretty easy.

Good Luck to you Silver!

PS. Pasta is a great meal for us financially challenged.

Feel free to joke around about it--I am!

I've actually done a little research, and this may turn out to be a pretty sweet deal for me.

My accumulated vacation and the severance pay I'll get next month will cover Paramedic school, and since I'm being laid off--I can draw unemployment!! Maybe I'll get back some of that tax money I've been pumping into the system for years. If I'm not working, I won't need my kids in daycare, so there's one less expense.

Also, (and this may just be an Oklahoma thing) I may get my school paid for through unemployment too!

Oh, and IAMedic? You joke about flipping burgers....I worked in a restuarant for five years before getting into emergency services...don't think I wouldn't do it again (gulp!) if I had too!

Bryan,

I too am sorry to hear the news. Unfortunatly that's "big buisness". I work for 1 of the top 10 Electric Utilities in the U.S. - just last month they had company wide meeting to get employee suggestions on how to cut the '03 & '04 budgets by 20% then they turned right around and announced bonuses for just about every one of the 69 VP's (and lord only knows what the Senior VP's and Exec officers got).

Anyhow - in hopes of lightning your spirits (and easing your meal budget) I have located:

Bryan,
Belts are tightening everywhere! My wife lost her job the week before Thanksgiving, and there are rumors that there will be layoffs at my place of employment. Merry F***n' Christmas! Unfortunately the moving idea is out of the question, we just bought a house. So far I havent heard anything concrete so I will keep my fingers crossed.
Sorry to hear about your job. Just to let you know you arent alone. Best of luck in Medic class. Just keep looking at it from the point of view that every kick is a boost. Things will work out!

Hang in there.
