I'm looking for some input on how many calls your EMS service will do in a years time and how many people live your service area? Any other info like how many stations and thier call volume would be helpful in my little servey aswell. I guess any little bits of info on your service would be kinda fun to read.

we run about 550 EMS runs anually with a steady climb through the years. We have 2 ALS transport units and 1 ALS Engine out of 1 station. We do about 70-80 % ALS transports. We are the only department in our county to run an ALS engine. All first out apparatus have limited ALS equipment on them. We were also the second deartment in 1994 (when we stared ALS care) to be all paid on call/ volunteer department offering this kind of care. www.rossfordfire.com

My agency runs approx 1100 calls per year, increasing. We see a major influx of calls during the summer months as we are a resort town with many beach bars. All three of our ambulances are ALS equipped, we have 6 advance care providers. Since we are volunteer we run mostly BLS crews to all calls, requesting ALS when on scene. We have 5 responder vehicles (a repaired fire damaged vehicle increased that number, 3 of them are 4x4 for beach extrication) 1 vehicle is currently a sign out first responder and three chief's each, one a permanent ALS responder. The last vehicle is awaiting final repairs and then we have to figure out what to do with it..... Possible swapping out an older Crown Vic for the 4x4 that gets repaired.

My service, East Baton Rouge Parish EMS runs right at 40,000 911 calls a year with 7 24 hour trucks working 12 hour shifts and another 5 "Power Trucks" which are on for 12 hours a day, coming on and going off duty are different times to cover peak call times. We have very busy stations (20-25 calls in 24 hours) as well as slow stations. I am not sure what the population is, probably around 350,000 to 400,000 and is 482 square miles in area, We cover the entire parish (county) We are municipal all ALS (dual paramedic) service. We don't do any transfers or non-emergency stuff, just 911. The area is diverse from metro to very rural. The area is VERY industrial (read Haz-Mat mecca) along the Mississippi River and leads to some very interesting calls.

My vollie runs 250+ calls a year, EMT-I squad. Our population is about 3000 w/ rural. We run 2 EMT-I (IV Start) rigs. We run Type III's. We put about 10,000 miles a year on the primary rig and 800 miles on the second rig.
My Paid Gig is County Hospital Based 24 hours ALS that runs about 12,000 a year and tier with almost every volunteer department in about a 45 mile region. We work 12 hour shifts. All rigs are ALS Type III's but we are upgrading our fleet to Medium duty International rigs at a cost of $150,000 per rig. We are getting one rig a year for the next 3 years. The reason for getting a Medium Duty is because we put about 60,000 - 70,000 miles a year on a rig and the Medium Duty rig is more economical to maintain than the Type III's.
Our "serving" population is about 20,000. We also have the second largest fair in the state rivaling the Iowa State Fair which brings about 320,000 people in 8 days.

We run between 20,000 and 22,000, with about 80% of them 911. (County creates an event when you go busy to do a transport). We run 6 MICUs daytime, along with 2 BLS and 2 squads (one ALS supervisor, one BLS QRS). Sometimes there is a management/SSM ALS truck. After 2300, we are down to 3 MICUs and a BLS.
Our county is just shy 500,000, and we run the city, and good chunk of the suburbs, maybe a population base of 200,000. We run out of 6 stations, from center city, to rural farmland. Call volumes range dramatically, up to 16 in twelve hours, all depending... Average call time is 20 minutes BLS, 30 minutes ALS.
We are a combination department; an independent EMS agency with hospital and municipal "oversight". Be advised "oversight" does not equal "financial support".

We run about 2400 calls with a pop. of around 13,000. 2 ALS units for normal days, and we page out a third unit as needed. One station, I'm going to guess at about 400 sq. miles.

The entire county of Franklin is 692 Square Miles with a population of 47,268 people (2000 Census)
An excerpt from franklincountyva.org (http://www.franklincountyva.org/pub_safety.htm) (My notations in brackets)
Emergency services are provided on a 24-hour basis by a combination volunteer and career system. A strong volunteer contingent of individuals who staff 18 county agencies [Fire & EMS], five non-jurisdictional agencies and one career division is the foundation of the County's public safety program.
For my Agency (EMS):
+/- 5000 People spread out over 79.8 Sq. Miles.
Generates roughly 350-375 Pt. Contacts per year (Everything from 911 to transports).
We staff 2 ALS Ambulances (Type I's), a Medium Duty Rescue truck and coming soon (as soon as Chevy get's off their butts and starts building the '03 Tahoes anyway) a BLS Quick Response Unit.
The "Career division" mentioned above staffs 3 ALS Ambulances (All Type III's I think) M-F 06:00 - 18:00. They are staffed by 2 person teams of FF/EMT & FF/Medic. Each team/rig is located in 1 of 3 stations.
Station 2 - Located in the heart of the county inside the Town of Rocky Mount.
Station 8 - South/West Area
Station 9 - North/East Area

Nashville Fire/EMS covers 500+ square miles of the Nashville-Davidson County Metro. We operate 14 "static" rigs that are 24/7 assigned to stations. Then there are 4 to 6 more "workload" rigs that come on and off daily and may change their station assignments based on need. EMS pulls 12hr shifts while supression is still on 24s. We operate 2 rapid "triage" cars with medics plus ALS engines have been added in some companies.
Medic 12 was selected by firehouse magazine as the busiest ambulance in the nation this year with 9,125 runs recorded. The department as a whole is running 75,000+ runs with 53,000+ being EMS runs.
Population for Nashville/Davidson County is about 560,000 and comes in the top 25 of the firehouse survey behind Washington DC. The day time population is about a million with all the commuters from the surrounding counties.
The thing about Nashville is the different areas. Because of the metro government you can work Medic 12 deep within the city one day and then "travel" to Medic 30 on the north end of the county the next where there are more trees than people. If it wasn't for the station a passerby probably wouldn't even believe they were still within the "city" limits.

My department runs 2400 EMS calls a year. Our district is about five square miles and has a population of about 40,000. We have four ALS ambulances, one ALS first responder. Our chiefs are BLS equipped and all our ALS care providers carry ALS equipment in their POV so they can report straight to the scene.
