Can someone explain to me what the diffirence is between a Type 1 Type 2 and Type 3 Ambulance? I've never been quite able to figure that out

Type I has the extended nose on it like most pickups and a box.

Type II is the complete van style.

Type III has the van style nose, but regular box.

Type II suck to work a code in

I have to disagree with you on the working a code in the back of a Type II sucks. In the volunteer service in the town I live in, we have 1 type 1 and one type 3. I ended up transporting with the paid service (AMR) in their Type 2. Granted the Type 2s don't have a lot of room in the back, but when it is just 1 or 2 people working a code in the back, it is perfect. Everything is right around you and within reach w/o having to stand up. Also, in the vans, the pt. is right infront of you where as in the Type 1 and 3s, there is a pretty big gap...

Overall, my favorite are the type IIIs. I don't really like the Type I we have in one of the services I belong to.

I can't stand type IIs , they are way to small, can't carry as much equipment, working codes is an absolute nightmare in them.
We use type IIIs with a center mount cot. I like those alot better.
I've never been inside a type I.

Worked in all three.....
Type one is what the military favors, hard to communicate with the driver effectively (I think)

Type two is OK....I worked a code in one with 2 fire fighters. Found it has small foot area to move your feet around. Fire fighters found its hard to work in turn out gear in one of them.

Type three is great. They are nice to ride in and work out of.

Most use mini-mods here now. They cost less and seem to be ok for what we use them for.

If you want the upclose and personal feel of the Type II and still actually have room to work with another person or two, try the Mini-mod concept. I've worked out of several and think they're great. An inherant problem with the Type II is the lack of / awkward storage of some equipment, plus you have to always lean forward when you sit on the bench seat.

The pt module of a type one is pretty much the same as a Type III. The only real difference is that most don't have an open passage way to the cab.

Medium duty Freightliners kick butt. I'm not a huge fan of the large sized ambulance, but if you gonna run a big truck and have the road space to run them, go for the medium duty.

As far as the communications issue goes, I've worked in Type I, III full-sized and mini-mods, Type IIs and Medium duty and find that it's hard to communicate with the driver period. Best solution I've seen so far is the intercom headset system. They're great, you can talk back and forth with no problems. Also, if you get two headsets for the front, you can use them while responding to calls with the windows down and still be able to easily hear your radio and/or talk to your partner over the siren and wind noise.

Type III's rock if you have the room and the money for them. These ambulances are great for workin in the subs. The city is another story...while Frieghtliners are sweet to work in, drivin them in the city is brutal. I work for a private in the city and most of ours are Type II vans or mini-mods. I prefer the mini-mods cause they are easier to drive than type III's but still offer more room to work than the vans. Unfortunately, vans are cheaper and we're getting more of them :(

I really don't care what I work out of. I kinda dig the T2. Small everything is right there. As long as what I have runs, has a cot, and is full of fuel I'm happy.
