I am taking an EMT class thru the State Fire & Rescue Training here in KY. I can't figure out why I am having trouble with it.... I have to have an 80 to pass a test and I have failed to pass one yet.... I have to have an 80 to pass the class and then I can take national registry.... I have studied and studied and just can't get past that 80 mark... What am I doing wrong????> Any ideas or suggestions on how to pass this freaking class?

I am certainly not qualified to answer your question, but I can make a suggestion. Perhaps if you can detail what specific items seem to cause the problem for you, others here might be able to lend a little insight.

I don't know exactly what the problem might be, but I can make a couple of suggestions. Try a new approach to the material. If you simply aren't grasping the material, try different methods of learning. Some people can simply read a book and know what to do, others have to learn it in a practical setting. Try different things and see what works. I'm sure the instructors, and other students, would be more than happy to work on some practicals with you.

If there are specific areas that you are having a lot of trouble with, what are they? It's hard to make productive suggestions without some specifics.

Good luck,

Practicals. And hands-on.

I'm an EMT student in PA, we only need to get a 70% on the state test to pass and that's the same for the modular tests. We do practicals just about every other class and it helps a lot. The station where I'm taking it is known for everyone passing the practical portion of the test and the majority pass the written the first time. I believe this is because of the constant practice. It means nothing if you can't apply it!

I am taking the EMT B class too and we only have to have a 70% to pass the class and to pass the state test. Which book are you studying out of? We use the Brady book and it is a great book. I also bought a workbook and the tests in that are similar to the state test and our instructors tests are similar to the state test too. there is a website for the brady book and they have tests on there if you would like it. email me at fyr.medic@verizon.net if you would like the site. I am at the station working today, so I don't have the link on this computer.

Sit down with a one on one with your instructor and discuss the situation. It is impossible to tell what your probs could be from your post. It could be a poor instructor, it could be poor motivation on your part, it could be distractions from other class mates, it could be a multitude of things. Every person learns at a different pace and style. Are numerous others having probs with the class or just you? I have found that if just a few are making poor scores, it is the student and if many are doing poor in the class, it is the instructor. But the low down is, if you want to pass this class, you are going to need to have a chit chat with your instructor and see where your weak points are and hopefully they are competent instructors and can help you with what you need.

That is the biggest problems with students. The are good with the hands-on, but when it comes to taking tests, they can't seem to get it. 1) You may not be a test-taker. There are a lot of people out there that can just can't take a test. 2) You can't put what you are reading into a physical light. That is that hardest to deal with. If you can't take what you are reading and visualize the steps and processes, all is lost. I can not give you advice on how to deal with that area, but check with your instructor, if you haven't already, and you really should be working closely with your instructor. That is what they are there for!!

Good Luck and Keep Us Informed!!
