Hope you don't mind my asking this question on behalf of my husband. He is in the middle of an accelerated paramedic course (he's in the military) and has chosen Phila for his "ride-alongs". Problem is, he needs to find a very busy service because he has one month to complete the necessary clinical experiences. (I think he said he has to have at least 50). I have an aunt who works at HUP looking into it for him but do you have any suggestions on which services are the busiest? Is there anywhere I could find this information? All I have come up with are yellow page type listings.

I have known people who went through the Medic programs in philly. Im sure if he just rides with the city fire department he will have no trouble getting his calls. They do thousands of calls in a years time. He'd be done in a week.

you don't need to worry about him getting runs in the city. They will run their tails off. Tell him to get in touch with the city and find out which is the busiest ambulances in Philly. There are probably a few that are running double what everyone else is running. Once he has the trucks that are the fastest ones, then get his rides set up with them.
If for some reason he can't run with Philly Fire-EMS then tell him to concentrate on urban locations anywhere basically. Whatever he is closest to will do.
Its going to be pretty much a given that any ambulance running EMS in a true city will be running like crazy.
Wish him good luck

1st off, does he have to pick a service or does his training program have an agreement with Philly Fire Rescue? When I was in school in Philly, we had to go to New Jersey for our ride time becuase PFD was too busy with their own students going through the PFD affiliated programs? Just a question that's all.
As for a suggestion about a busy medic truck, I have 2 for you to pass on to your husband. #1 Medic 8: good old Kensington! Busy busy busy. Plenty of trauma (the n. philly knife & gun club is open year round if ya know what I mean) and overdoses. #2 Medic 1, I am pretty sure they are still in China Town but I am not sure. Tell him to stay away from places like Medic 30 (PHX airport truck) and Medic 10 in the northeast, these are super slow trucks. I moved to South Carolina last year, so these suggestions are in the "if memory serves me correctly" category.
