I know when I was in EMT school, 1-rescuer and 2-rescuer were identical with respect to compression-to-breath ratio at 15\2. Within the last 3 months I recerted my CPR with the ARC and was agian taught 15/2 for both 1 and 2 rescuer CPR.
Yesterday a guy came into the squad, and he had just come from AHA recert for CPR. He said they taught 15\2 for single rexcuer and 5\1 for 2 rescuer.
I found this very interesting and at first thought the instructore must be idiots, but then I figured I would do a little looking and see because I haven't heard anything about the change.
BTW, we are talking adult CPR.

Not that I'm aware of, but then again, I'm an ARC instructor, not AHA. Still, my ARC Chapter generally tells us of changes like that.
The 2001 Edition of AHA's BLS for Healthcare Providers, which unless I'm wrong is the most current edition, states 15:2 for both 1 and 2-rescuer adult CPR. Same goes for the ARC.
15:2 for 1-rescuer and 5:1 for 2-rescuer was what I was first taught about 4 years ago when I first took the AHA BLS class, but they changed it in 2001 or 2002 to be 15:2 for both. That's what I was trained on when I renewed in 2002, in fact, the instructor made a big deal of the fact that this was a major change.
Sounds like this particular instructor may be operating off of the old guidelines.

As an long time instructor for both Red Cross and American Heart and having just completed certification for both, the 15:2 is current for both 1 and 2 rescuer CPR on adults.
the 15:2/5:1 was changed with the ECC 2000 updates and should have been in the instructors hands by 2001. Any instructor teaching this is not only using old manuals, but very old manuals.

im a aha instructor myself and the only changes is the aed part, where you may now use an aed on a child as young as one yr old provided you have the ped. pads. the comp breath ratio is 15/2 both one and two person cpr.

Your absolutely correct. Both one and two rescuer adult CPR is 15:2 since the GL2000 rollout and has been the only standard since July 2001. These instructors where not teaching the current standards. Old habits die hard and I still see some doing adult CPR at the old 5:1 ratio

Although the AHA is preparing to release the new guidelines soon (2005 if I heard Dr. Hunter right)
They already released the new AED Guidelines earlier this year

I heard the other day that when the new CPR guidelines come out, the compression/ventilation ration will be somewhere around 30/2.

I just recerified tonight in emt-b class. We were taught 15/2, for adult 1 or 2 rescuer, Child/Infant: 5/1. We were also told to shoot for 100 compressions a minute, to use that as a guide. Hope this helps. BTW its AHA I believe. Will know for sure when I receive my card.

I recently received my CPR card and it is AHA.
As far as the 5:1, we were taught one and two person CPR on an adult is 15:2 UNLESS they are intubated, then it is 5:1. Children and infants are 5:1.

I am not yet an EMT-B but taking the class and just yesterday (oct. 2nd) I took our CPR (AHA) and it was 15-2 either way for adult and 5-1 for infant. I am not an expert but have been CPR cert. for a few years now and its always been 15-2. Just thought I would put my 2 cents in since I just took the class.
By the way I love this forum...I am often here reading what you guys are posting here. Its very helpful to us newbies! Thanks :D
