I believe we pull our AED out twice a year. We just did ours last night. We're "tested" on it then also. I think it may be either on OSHA or NY State requirement to do it twice a year.

Every three months we have a Cardiac Arrest Management refresher class. Everyone trains on a simulator up to their level of certification including CPR, BVM's, OPA & NPA's, combitube, endotracheal tubes, AED, and medication simulations.

From the article
Chattahoochee High School had only recently obtained its defibrillator and the model it got was different from the one on which school officials had trained.
When Boslet's heart attack occurred on Feb. 20, 2003, the trained staffer couldn't find the device's pads, which were tucked under a flap inside the box. The adhesive electrode pads, placed on the chest, are needed to deliver the electrical shock that can restore heart rhythm. School officials thought the device was not operable and no one else tried to get it to work.
I'm sorry, but this example is one of stupidity on the part of the high school. there are dozens of different version of defibs on the market, all are different. if you buy one, you train on that one. you don't train with a lifepak if you plan on using a laerdal. train with what you use, this way those that are being trained know how to use their equipment properly.
as for our training, all members are trained on how to use it in the CPR w/AED class. if they go to a differnt site, and they are unfamiliar with our type of defib, then they are supposed to ask one of the senior members for assistance.
