Hey guys-
I was wondering how many systems out there have preceptors for EMT-I and Paramedic students. And how is it decided when the students are done. Is it an amount of hours they have to ride "once they reach x amount of hours are they signed off." Or are the students signed off by a preceptor after showing they can manage calls effectivley. Or is a combination of the two. Please be as specific as possible. In my system currently we have preceptors that say when the students are done however this is being called in to question as of late.
I am just curious how other systems "precept" students.
Thanks for your responses.

Our system has I think, a very strong precept program. We precept EMT-I and EMT-P. For the paramedic portion, It's the total hours and number of skills performed. Each student have over 500 hours of precept time. Within that time, they must demonstrate appropriately the knowlege, know how, and a certain number of times the skill is performed. For example, the student must have a certain number of cardiac calls, respiratory calls, live child birth, and at least 50 calls to where they act as lead medic on a call. If they finish all their ride time hours but come up short on the number of skills performed, then they do not graduate until all is completed. The local college out here is a two or four year degree program. The local colleges work real well with us in designing the criteria needed in order to graduate. We do have 13 other universities that ride with us but they do not have the same requirements. Approximately 20 to 30 students graduate the paramedic program and receive a degree.

We just make sure they show up for at least half the shifts, with no "obvious" booze on the breathe.
We just sit up front and let them do all the work- hey, if the pt codes, it's better experience for em!!!
Of course we're not a COUNTY EMS TEACHING SYSTEM...

Depends on the goodies they bring throughout the internship. Great goodies and you are out in 20, ok goodies and you are out in 25, you bring crap or nothing you are lucky to get out in 30......
There also is the "half a brain rule", but we leave that one to ourselves.

The service I'm working for just put into effect a policy (just in time for me). You have to meet with the preceptor coordinator, The medical director, and do a 1/2 day in the ER prior to being able to ride as a double medic crew. You have to ride at least 40 hours as a double medic (riding double with a supervisor) until you and the supervisors feel that you are comfortable. This is all after getting the state certification and going through clinical/field time for the medic program.

Alot of our area agencies (fire) require a 6-month probation with a senior medic before being allowed to work alone (ie on an engine).

The system I work with has preceptors ( I Guess) and you ride with these Medics and get eval on each ride a long you must complete so many hours of ride time before you complete the program.
Within this "ride time" you must do a certain amout of required skills if the skills are not completed with in that time you would have to spend addition time on units until the skill are completed.
