In our county we have 6 ALS and 2 BLS trucks. The 2 BLS trucks run out of 2 of the 10 rescue squads in the county. One at our base and another in the western part. It seems lately that the ALS trucks are quick to cancel the first responders or BLS truck coming to them and then 5 minutes later call back and ask for PRI 1 (lights and siren) response for a driver. We have talked about this numerous times and get the same answer. WE DON"T NEED ALL THESE PEOPLE ON EVERY CALL. Just a lil confused can anyone help with a solution

If the ALS units are being premature about canceling the BLS response, it will eventually come to bite them in the a** when they need the extra help and the care needed is not provided due to lack of manpower.

Sounds to me like management needs to step in and evaluate the problem and act. A good solid SOP/SOG to guide personnel would be a start, along with better QA/QI to find out why this is happening and why some are cancelling units quickly then to ask them to respond again. The comment we don't need all these people on every call is a BS response to personal opinion and perhaps ego problems. Until you are sure you are going to transport, don't need extra assistance have them continue in. If they arrive on scene adn you don't need them, ask them to stand by outside and put them in service on the scene so they are available for other calls but also to you if you need any other assistance.
