The numbers for January are in and its the busiest month on record for my system (Sunstar EMS). 10,572 transports which works out to 341 per day. Figure in we only transport 1 in 3 911 calls, thats almost 32,000 ALS responses or just over 1,000 per day!

Thats about 100 transports more then usuall. Im sure last months numbers will be close to the same. Anyone else seeing a significant increase?

I need a nap. :D

How big is your system?

We've noticed a big increase in our call volume since hurricane rita. We figured it would go back to normal afterwards but it hasn't, still increasing.

With close to a million people in your county, your doing par. Your lucky to have as many ambulances as you do. We are a county of 600,000 and only have 14 ambulances. We run approx 55k calls per year and no non emergency transports. Consider yourself lucky.

January was a busy month for us also, but it is begining to slow to normal. We run approx 2600 ems calls a year and were on track for 3600 by January's numbers.
No good reason, just busy.

That's because everything from skid-row Louisiana has migrated into your cities in Texas....and unfortunately...once they settle, they ain't goin' nowhere...pretty soon you will notice an increase in the amount of taxes being taken out of your paychecks to support the newfound burden on medicaid...hate to sound stereotypical...but if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...then it's prolly a duck...

We're up too. Our two medic units BOTH ran 1000 calls last year and are on the mark to run 1100 each this year!

Hey Dave1983: I hope your not so TIRED from working your scab job that you can't run the 2-3 calls you normally run out there on the beach. Must be nixce to get a rest from your part time job while on duty at the FD. AYou get no sympathy from me brother,

That's what we figured out since our area was one of the dump off spots. We've since added an extra 24 truck and trying to get another 12 hour truck if possible.

Have you always been this ignorant?

No Dave: not since I've read your posts about a small town FD that doesn't do anything. What is ignorant about my post? You complaining about running SO many calls with PRIVATE EMS?

Whats sad is that I know a city of around 500,000 that only has 6 full time ambulances. they have I think another 6-8 part time that they staff occasionally but the medics who work there say its nothing for them to be up all night long responding all over the city

Dave1983: I'm not sure you want a war of words, but it appears you do. I belive some people on these forums exaggerate their call volume and/or fire calls to pretend they are very busy. I know from personal experience that your Dept basically doen't do ****E. Admittedly, you are very knowledlable on the Pinellas County 600 series SOP'S. That said, when was the last time you had a working structue fire

Dave1983: You call me ignorant, yet I've seen you on these boards try to discuss tactics/strategy with members who work for large urban depts. I'm not ontentionally trying to knock you Bro, but you are way out of your league. There is no fire whre you are and besides the occassional medical call, you don't do squat. I can tell from your posts that you are very knowledgale about many things, especially ladders/ and pumping but please don't tell us about your actual fireground experience which is probably close to nothing. I'm willing to bet that you haven't had 10 working fires in the years you have with "The Beach". Call me ignorant? You opened the door to a poopstorm. Sorry you are so "TIRED" from working your part time job with Sunstar which directly competes with FD first resonse ALS to see who is the paramedic in charge. Take some nice pictures of you in your blue Sunstar helmet and post tehm so we can see what you really do. Please don't call me Einstein, it would be a discredit to a man who worked so hard to make the world a better place, not one who relaxes in the recliner recuperating from his part time job.

You do realize you keep makeing my point, dont you? The more you type, the more cluless you sound. You have no idea who I am, or much experiance I actually have.

Let me give you a hint. All that "knowledge" you give me credit for, didnt come from reading books. Let me ask you a question. When was the last time you pumped a rig with 5 lines and a master stream flowing? And the 10 fires, we had 8 last year on my shift alone (working fire that is, not food on the stove). Not quite St.Pete, but not bad for a "small town" FD. Oh wait, I must be lying since we dont do anything out here. Right?

As for "being out of my leauge", no sh*t Sherlock. Everyone of us down here is when compared to FDNY. Thats the main reason Im on these forums, to learn from the best.

And you can stop trying to pin this on me. Your the one that fired back with the SCAB comment about Sunstar. And for what its worth, I was commenting on the system as a whole. The increase Ive noticed is at FD, not my pt job on the bus. I only work like 4 shifts a month at Sunstar. Didnt know that, did you? But it speaks to my claim. You dont know what your talking about.

Sorry you feel the way you do. I would ask if you were on the job when Suntar was created, but your comments lead me to belive you were not. Cause if you were (like I was) you would know that it was the FDs and the cities that turned down the offer from the county to transport. They didnt want it. The county had to do something. What do you suggest, do away with Sunstar and have all the patients drive themselves to the ER? And really, do you want to do FD trnasport? I know I sure as h**l dont, and neither do any of the other FD Bros I know (and thats quite a few).

Dave1983: Good post, I wasn't trying to attack you personally, I'll admit I may have interpreted your initial post incorrectly. I apologize for my crappy attitude, lately we have been EXTREMELY busy at my FD which does do transport. It does stink being up all day and night ad then having to do an inter-hospital transport at 0300 a.m. for a stable BLS pt. But I will say I had 15 yrs experience on ALS engines and transport rescues definetly make you a better medic. I remember the days of running 300+ calls a month on an ALS engine, but the majority of the calls you could turn over in less than 20 minutes. How we used to bitch when we had to follow to the hospital!!! The system I work in runs a fair amount of fires but to be honest, I haven't done an interior attack in over 3 months, mostly due to the high volume of EMS calls. And yes, I was around when the Pinellas chiefs could not get their act together to form a plan for FD transport. I should run for county commissioner in Pinellas, I bet I could save millions in EMS funding by creating a mostly BLS system.....AHHH enough of me, remember SAS ambulance? That's where I got my start. PS- Your decrepit old fire chief looked like crap on TV last week at that water tank overflow.

Yes I do. Stanleys Ambulance Serivce is were I did my ride time in EMT school.

And he looks like that in person, not just TV. :D

Nice idea, but there is too much $$$ too be made in ALS, so as long as the system runs in the black I doubt anything will ever change. But hey, maybe you should run, Id vote for a Bro. ;)

There is some Private EMS that does your basic BS Grandma is not as responsive blah, blah, blah here. Coastal Health does some prehospital BLS/ALS runs for the Secure Nursing Facilities in Brevard County, but nowhere near enough to take the burden off some of the facilities

Yea, its a for-profit company, and they usually bill Medicare, or Medicade, and it DOES help take some of the pressure off the 911 system, especially when you can put 2 EMTs and a BLS bus on a call, instead of 5 Fire/Medics, a Rescue, and an Engine. It is a good idea, but it kinda burns the guiys out, not having any traumas or anything like that. I got tired of the non emergency runs, so I moved to dispatching a Medivac Helo
