I am attending the DoD Fire Academy in November, I have already completed Essentials of Firefighting. Is there a book offered for EMT-B training that I could read to get my feet wet, start learning some terms and such. Thanks in adavance.

The Essentials manual is still used as well as the new Delmar books for N.P.Q. 1 and 2.

Brady also just released a new E.M.T. manual so call and ask questions as to which reference material they will be using prior to coming out of your pocket with the money.

USAFSSGT,
Would it be accurate to assume you're cross training into fire? I'm SF right now and have been looking for a way into Fire or EMS for two years... any tips? lol It's a long shot I know but it's AF Fire or Permanent Civilian Status for me.

Thanks,

Books are expensive to buy.. not recommended until you find out what book you'll be using. However, AAOS (american academy of orthopeadic surgeons) has a website called emtb.com that has a lot of very useful introduction type material and it's all FREE!!!.

The standard textbook for Tennessee and I would imagine the states that recognize National Registry is "Brady's Prehospital Emergency Care"and runs about $70.00.There's also a workbook that needs to be done for your grade.Try a local community college that offers EMT courses to start your search with, unless you are required to obtain materials from an approved source.
One of my classmates was irked because she found out after doing all the workbook herself (the proper way) that the answers, except for the report writing exercises, were in the back.Later on,she got livid because the instructor just flipped through to see if there was writing on all of the applicable pages and handed it back to her.
In addition,Tennessee DOT is doing away with the EMT-B level and replacing it with EMT-IV,which is just a Basic who is trained in starting IVs.The skills you learn in one state for licensure may not always get you the same level and allowed job skills in another.
For example, when I take the test, and pass as an EMT-IV,I am wanting to return to Kentucky which,if I remember correctly, does not have Bs start IV lines. That is an Intermediate level skill there.
If and when you move to another state, check on what that state requires for training and what you will be able to do that you learned at the last stop.
Good luck with it.
