Hello,

Does anyone have or have any ideas about EMS response to school incidents? Maybe something alongs the lines of School Bus Accidents or a school violence incident.

Anything will help, Thanks

I know this didn't answer your question but here we don't really have a protocol or SOP for it. You just handle it like any other MCI or GSW incident

I found this form online a couple weeks ago, I thought it was a good idea for handling bus accidents. http://www.paems.org/Documents/EMS%20Multiple%20Casualty%20Release%20Form.pdf

When it comes down school violence incidents, it is imperative to understand that this will not be like any other MCI type you may deal with. Particularly with an active shooter(s). Pre-planning and drilling with you local law enforcement, fire department and the school district/system is critical in having a coordinated and hopefully successful response. The lessons learned from Columbine completely changed the law enforcement's response to these incidents and it also should change ours. This isn't always necessarily easy as I've even had strong professional arguments over how triage areas should be set up, how they can be set up and the difference in how a school violence incident, in detail involving fire arms shouldn't be treated similiarly as in other active shooter incidents in residential or commercial buildings. One of the things that caused extreme criticism in the wake of columbine was how emergency services did not take immediate action to the threat, mostly law enforcement but also fire/ems. I for one am an extremist at all levels when it comes to our safety, however I think there are productive means to do it, drawing from my prior military/law enforcement tactic knowledge, instead of the sit and stage approach while children, teenagers and school staff could bleed to death awaiting clearance.

Thank you for bring up such a quaility topic. Hopefully more conversation will come from it.
