I was just contacted by king county hr dept and told applications come out soon. Any medic one medics care to give testing advise? Whats the averge number of applicants that we are competing with? Do you have writen, physical test, if so what to study? Have you heard any word as to how many you may be hiring?

I can tell you you are not competing against medics but EMTs and medics, as they will put you through their own paramedic program regardless.

Their last testing had about 300 applicants at first pass.

Testing is very competitive.

Mittle can offer more.

King County Medic One strives to hire individuals that will perform well in the academic setting. Successful candidates must demonstrate spatial reasoning skills, critical thinking skills, and leadership ability. Candidates should be exemplary in teamwork and customer service skills as well. Qualified candidates are given a series of evaluations, which include:

* General Knowledge Test
* EMT Level Test
* Physical Agility Test
* Assessment Center
* Physical Exam
* Criminal Background Check
* Two Oral Boards
* Psychiatric Evaluation Exam

Remember, it's an EMT level test, so study the basics.
Agility test involves picking up/lowering a weighted gurney, carrying some stuff up/down stairs, nothing too exciting.
Assessment center involves simulated pt exam and treatment.
Oral boards will often include a chat with Dr Copass, and can be a little intense.
Please be sure you meet the minimum requirements before wasting any more of your time.

Many of the current medics have RN's, some PA's, so the level of education is rather high, compared to other similar agencies. College degree is the norm rather than the exception, but not a requirement. Prior medic cert doesn't really help, and some feel may hurt :)

Please make sure your background is squared away. If you have any issues (ie credit, driving, criminal), make sure you have resolved them, and have a reasonable explanation for what happened. Saying you didn't know about the 20 bounced checks doesn't cut it.

Have some knowledge about the agency and area they serve. I assume you are testing for South King County Medic 1, since you're obviously not a firefighter in one of the core agencies or you would know all this.

If hired, school is 1 year, followed by 1 year of probation.
Rather high level of performance is expected.

The total number of applicants is rarely huge, because most don't meet the entry requirements. Average hire is 1-4.

A strong background in pt care ,and OUTSTANDING EMT-B skills is mandatory.
They will not hire average EMT's and make them medics. They expect you to already have the basics mastered.
