Hello all, I need some help writing a justification letter to my boss. I work at a steel plant as a on shift EMT/Security. We have two patrol vehicles we use and they both have green lights instead of red. I would like to enlist some help in writing a justification letter on why we should use red lights and sirens instead of green lights. To me, this seems easy to justify, but to the boss it isn’t so. We respond to all emergency’s including fire alarms, medical, burglar alarms, radiation alarms, accidents, basically anything that happens on the property or on the state highway that runs through the property.
I’m looking for someone that can give me some info on what could change his mind. If anyone has a documents that show green lights aren’t as useful as one thinks. I only know of two groups maybe that use green lights, mall security and the forestry service. Well, were not protecting a mall, and were not fighting forest fires either.
If anyone could help I would be appreciative.
Thank You, Bill

there are laws on the books that cover this topic which is probably why your service is using green. Typically, only law enforcement/911 services can use blue/red color emergency strobes. Green or amber are typically designated for non 911 personel like energy co, security, construction, towing, etc...
Just check with your county laws before you proceed because I'm pretty sure the laws are somewhat universal nationwide

In Virginia, security vehicles can be equipped with amber lights. An exception is spelled out in code section 46.2-1023, which specifies who can use red or red and white lights. Security vehicles used by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co, Bassett walker, Inc, Tultex Corporation, the Winchester Medical Center, and the NASA Wallops island Flight facility can use red or red and white lights.
You may have to petition your state legislation to get the law changed.
Stay SAFE!!!

To me, this seems easy to justify, but to the boss it isn’t so.before you go trying to justify the change to your boss, make sure you get the appropriate permits from the state department of motor vehicles, they are the ones who will approve or deny your permit to put red lights on your vehicle.

SteelEMT, where is your service located, and are you a licensed fire and/or EMS service in that state?
