I am currently a Texas certified EMT-B. I'm looking to move to Boston and get on with Boston EMS. I am unable to find any information on their hiring process regarding certification. Does anyone know if they hire basics and then provide education for Paramedic cert? Thanks!

you have got to be kidding.
here is a suggestion:
Google "boston emergency medical services"
the first result is Boston EMS Main Page, http://www.bostonems.com/ (I know, kinda hard to guess)
now you wanted employment, look at the 6th link on the left:
http://www.bostonems.com/rtqi/employment.html
not to sound rude, but if you really are looking to relocate for a job, the least you can do is make the effort to do a google search to find the answers you are looking for. I bet if you look really close, you can even find the email address for the boston EMS recruiter (it's there, i found it). he can probably answer any and every question you have regarding getting a job with Boston EMS

I do not appreciate your rudeness and brashness displayed in your reply. I have in fact called and emailed Boston EMS (with no reply as of yet), as well as extensively looked through their website. It is just unclear whether or not they have on the job Paramedic training/school. Try and be more civil with your next post. I just wanted to speak with some fellow EMT's on the matter, but apparently that was asking too much.

wow. you ask a question without even bothering to research the answer. The answer to your questions are on that site. if you have extensively looked for it, i suggest you look harder because I was able to find them, and it look me only 2 minutes. Instead of coming on here saying you can't find the answer, just use google, it's amazing what type of info it has, especially under the EMPLOYMENT section
btw, if you think i'm abrasive for calling you on not actually doing the legwork in order to find the answers to your own question, then I don't think you would survive boston EMS (or any urban EMS for that matter).

Look, I HAVE researched the answer. I know that Boston EMS has a school to obtain an EMT-B certification. All I was wondering was if Paramedic cert was possible through them, how long it took, and more details about it from someone who either worked there or knows more about it. Don't tell me I didn't do my research. I didn't post with the intent of being told I haven't done the "legwork". I just wanted to make sure I was understanding correctly. You do not know me, do not assume things about me.

Hi TexasTech and welcome to the forums. I hope someone with some Boston experience chimes in.
Dr. Parasite, did you really mean "not to sound rude"?
I don't usually jump into these little tiffs but you all wanted more moderation. Please be considerate :)

Dr. Parasite, did you really mean "not to sound rude"?Hi Editor, while I was going to walk away fro this thread, I will respond to your question:
Yes. I don't know where in Texas, our southern friend is from, but I am familiar with both big city EMS and little city EMS, as well as getting hired at any job. Most of the time an employer expects you to know about the company before you step foot in the interview. I don't know if TexasTech is from the sticks, the farm land, the suburbs, or the big cities of texas, but in the north east, if an prospective employee walked into my office and didn't know basic things about my organization, especially if the answers are on my website, the likelyhood of hiring him would decrease significantly.
might be different down south, but that's how we do things here, and I wanted to make sure he knew it.

Seriously?!? This is my first time posting on these forums and I get attacked?!? What a horrible site....I am not "going" to an interview anytime soon and just wanted some advice from someone IN Boston. Dr. Parasite....I don't think you understand my question. There isn't adequate information on the website about whether or not Boston EMS offers on the job paramedic training with a possible state cert or whether it is only paramedic training within their protocol. Jesus man, what the hell is your problem? I said I was considering moving there, not going to an interview tomorrow. Get a life and grow some balls outside of typing on your keyboard.
If anyone else would still like to answer my question it would be greatly appreciated.

Is this typical behavior for emsresponder.com forums? Am I in the wrong here?

Dan,
Being "crusty" means being clever, crafty, with the intent to amuse. Your comments here are rude and disrespectful. Yes, you are correct in everything you say. Does that give you the right to belittle a fellow EMT that is looking for information? Presenting someone the steering wheel from the ambulance they wrecked, or giving a "Golden Catheter" award is clever and amusing. Your comments seem to be personal and demeaning. The very reason TexasTechEMT is here is to solicit information from his peers AFTER he has exhausted web research.

good luck, let me know if you ever get hired by BEMS.. personally, i won't be holding my breath.

Dr. Parasite, I appreciate your point of view, but please also appreciate that I can't have new members being chased out of the forums.
TexasTech, arguing is common here yes, but it's generally good natured. I hope you'll stick around.
When it comes to arguing here - if established members want to engage in mutually agreeable antagonistic banter, I'm not going to spoil your fun. However, plain rudeness is a poor reflection of the profession and a detriment to this community. Moving on...

All of BS aside, I am the former Superintendent(Bureau Chief) of Boston EMS retired post 35 years. Boston EMS hires only Mass Certified EMTs ( they do run a community based EMT program from which they draw recruits) Paramedic is a clinical promotion which is the equivalent of Captain. All paramedics must first work at least two years as a basic EMT. Promotion to Paramedic is an in house competitive process, open to department EMTs who have taken a paramedic program either outside the department or within the occasional department sponsored program.

The previous BS aside, Boston EMS only hires for BLS positions ( Mass certified for reciprocity check with Massachusetts OEMS again via Google) , many Paramedics apply and serve for approximately two years as BLS, until such time as they qualify to compete in the promotional process for Paramedic. Note: Paramedic is a clinical promotion equal to a Captain. BEMS does run an ongoing community EMTB program from which it attempts to recruit. BEMS also occasionally, PRN, runs an in house Paramedic program to meet HR needs, again these slots are highly prized and competitive among the ranks ( because of the quality of the program many outside certified Medics will compete to repeat the the program in EMS) Above and beyond these requirements are residency, often will consider conditional offer of employment requiring proof of residency on appointment.
As Joe Friday said, Just the facts from the former EMS Bureau Chief Training & QI now happily retired after 35 years
