i am a full time medic and i have been working since 1990. i have worked for several different types of system such as county run with 24 hr stations to several private ems agencies that have shifts from 8 to 12 hrs. currently i am working for a large 911 system utilizing a large for proffit company. my questions is this, how does system status mgmt affect back injuries. i have read in ems mag. that sitting for long periods of time in a running truck may make you prone to back injuries. so far, i have never had one. any idea on this one?

Hmmm, thats a good question.
When I was young and in the military I screwed my back up pretty badly. Despite my back injury, I went to work in EMS when I left the Army. I can tell you that interspersing the "carry-the-fat-guy-with-chest-pain-down-from-the-third-floor-drill" with sitting for long periods in an idling, non-ergonomically correct ambulance definitely delayed my recovery. My back never really healed until I got my first flight job and stopped working the street full time.
To me, it would seem rather obvious that SSM would make one more prone to back problems than lounging in an easy chair between calls.
But it would be an interesting thing to see a real study on.
