View Full Version : New York City EMS.....

This is a multiple part questions…..
1)In New York City (and I know it occurs in other places) there are other ambulance companies other than FDNY EMS. However I noticed that FDNY does not get every call for service. How does NYC decide if FDNY or another ambulance company gets the call?
2)Can a Mississippi EMT certification be granted reciprocity in NY?
3)I know FDNY hires for firefighter every 4 years. Does that apply to EMS also?
4)(This has nothing to do with EMS) The FDNY website says you have to have a NY driver’s license to be eligible for employment. So do they let out of state applicants get their NY drivers license if and after they are hired?
Thanks everyone. I tried to find these answers but couldn’t without actually contacting FDNY directly.
Stay safe out there.

1) closest ambulance goes. each ambulance has a a response area. the hospital ones are generally closest to the hospital.
2) not sure, call the NYS DOH and ask. or check out this link http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/ems/certification/reciprocity.htm
3) http://www.nyc.gov/html/fdny/html/community/employment_index.shtml
4) probably.
word of advice FDNY EMS is well known for hiring people, paying them poorly, and having horrible working conditions. however, you do get good experience.
if you want, you can also try to get hired by one of the NYC hospitals (which can be difficult), or by one of the hospital based EMS systems in NJ/NYC metro area.

Strangely, I've almost exclusively heard that about the "civilian" employees, which is to say the EMS side of things. Rarely, if ever, heard it about the fire side.
Disclaimer: I've never really had a long chat with anybody who works there, so this is all rumor and supposition.

sorry, you are correct, that is only the EMS side. with the thread being about the EMS side, I thought that was implied. I will edit for clarification.

Won't do yourself any favors using FDNY*EMS to shoehorn yourself into FDNY (Fire). The guys know who took the easy way in (EMS to Fire), and who got hired fair and square like everybody else. They will treat you accordingly.
Not saying it's right, or even fair. But you should know that that's how it is.

Of course you'd say that, if you were one of them.
As some of the FDNY members here (who got in the open exam way like everybody else) what THEY think.
(Ps- I think the word you're looking for is "accepted.")

If you want to know what actual FDNY firefighters think of the EMS promotional.....

The EMT's who come into FDNY EMS just so they can slip in through the promotional are scumbags for pulling that kind of stuff. They don't care about EMS, and they aren't motivated enough to go through the real process. The merger was the biggest mistake in the history of the city's emergency services.

lets just say I'm familiar with EMS in the city. FDNY messed up a lot of things, and if they go through with their master plan of cross-training all their firefighters to be paramedics and putting Paramedic Rescue Engines into service, then its going to be even worse. Firefighters who can barely function at the CFR level.

I followed the attached link and spent some time on their board. It seems the attitude displayed by some of the firefighters highlights what is wrong with some of fire based EMS. Their holier than thou haughty attitude is the wrong course to take in a public safety career. They don't want EMS, they had EMS thrust on them, and they treat EMS providers like dirt.

yeah, the arrogance and sense of entitlement that those guys display is sickening. I've lost a lot of respect for FDNY.

Does any one know how often they offer these promotional tests and when the next one is?
