The last ever ER was broadcast last night. Many expected NBC' s show to go out with a bang. One former member of the cast suggested a nuclear blast.

What we got instead was a stunning reminder of the existential glory of EMS!

At the very end, Dr. Carter leads Dr. Green's daughter into the ER to begin treating burn and trauma victims from a gas explosion.

Dr. Carter is not on staff at the county hospital any more. He is a well heeled private community care physician. The young lady is a college senior with good MCAT scores hoping to be an emergency doc like her father some day.

Neither Carter nor the rising senior are on the payroll, but they saddle up and soldier on one more time or soldier in for the first time respectively.

The beat goes on! The public hospital does die or get closed down. A dream lives on.

We need to have it do so in real life! ;)

Those who don't mind a commercial or two can watch for free at NBC's website (http://www.nbc.com/Vintage_Shows/Emergency/about/). :D
