This month’s Insider features an interview with October cover report author Jim Augustine, MD,of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.
Listen to the podcast to learn more about Jim, both an author and member of the EMS Magazine editorial advisory board, and to hear the background behind his exclusive report.:The Emergency Department Major Incident Center – A Model for Community Investment in Regional Emergency System Preparedness.”
Since September 11, 2001, there has been much debate about the level of preparedness in the United States, and the general consensus is that we are woefully unprepared to respond to a major terrorist attack or a natural disaster.
Jim’s report proposes a vision for the future that could address these shortcomings through the development of emergency departments as major incident response centers, which would be fully integrated with the overall health system and the local community’s emergency response system. In this interview, Jim explains his inspiration for this idea, and shares its interesting historical context.
