Dr. Keith Wesley is a board certified emergency medicine physician living in Eau Claire Wisconsin. He is the former Wisconsin State EMS Medical Director and currently serves as the Minnesota State Medical Director; Chair of the National Council of State Medical Directors; and medical director for HealthEast Medical Transport in St. Paul, Minnesota. He is a prolific EMS author and lecturer as well as contributor to e-learning producer Emergency Preparedness Systems, LLC.

Excellent lecture, Dr. Wesley! I have 25+ years experience dating back to 1978 and I could not agree with you more, that high quality CPR is the most imporatant part of a successful resuscitation. EMS providers too often develop “tunnel vision” and neglect the most important part of being successful.

Question: How often do we train EMS providers in scence safety and then turn around and tell them to perform CPR in an ambulance moving at a high rate of speed?

As an AHA Instructor, I could not agree with you more, Doc. We see students come into our training center, not only for BLS training,but ACLS and PALS as well, with a poor attitude toward CPR. They usually leave totally convinced of the need for high quality CPR. If they don’t, we as educators have not done our jobs. Great piece Doc
