New York Organ Donor Network is one of the largest organ procurement organizations in the country. Its mission is to recover organs and tissues for those in need of life-saving and life-improving transplants and to increase awareness and understanding of donation among health care professionals and the general public. With respect and compassion, we provide individuals with the knowledge required to make informed decisions about donation.
Role & Responsibilities:
Provides specialized acute crisis support intervention services for newly bereaved families of potential organ and tissue donors. Reports on-site at designated hospitals when supporting families of potential rapid donation after cardiac death donors as well as riding in the Organ Preservation Vehicle when a referral is made. Covers field call for service area hospitals and approaches families in a hospital setting.
Counsels families to help them understand rapid donation after cardiac death, brain death, and the process of organ and tissue donation thereby facilitating the consent process. Assures consent and donation rates equivalent to the national average. Works with outside providers (Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics, New York Fire Fighters, New York Police Department, Designated Service Area hospitals staff, etc) to minimize the trauma associated with the death of a loved one.
Qualifications:
Experience as an EMT and or Paramedic, BA/BS in counseling, psychology or social services from a college or university and one-two years with related experience and/or training preferred. Must possess knowledge of the dynamics of grief and bereavement. Health care experience in trauma/critical career setting preferred.
Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
