July 31--OAKLAND -- A 49-year-old gunman who hospital workers described as "disturbed and disoriented" charged into the emergency room at Children's Hospital Oakland on 52nd Street early Friday morning, police and a hospital official said.

The gunman, later identified as Cottriel Broadnax, of Oakland, ran past a security guard, grabbed a female hospital worker and briefly held the gun on her before being subdued by police, hospital spokeswoman Erin Goldsmith said.

Broadnax is an ex-convict whose lengthy criminal record includes convictions for burglary, robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, police said.

The disturbance began about 3:15 a.m., ending about eight minutes later, Goldsmith said.

"Hospital security and our medical staff reacted calmly and tried to convince the man to drop the gun," she said.

Oakland police arrived within minutes to set up a perimeter, stationing officers with rifles around the hospital entrance, said Holly Joshi, an Oakland police spokeswoman. Officers Marcos Campos and Phong Tran confronted the man and talked him into surrendering peacefully, police said.

No one was injured, and no patients witnessed the incident, said Nancy Shibata, the hospital's chief nursing officer.

Police say Broadnax was the same man who frightened a woman at a nearby gas station just minutes before the incident at the hospital.

A woman getting gas at 47th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way reported a man jumping on the hood of her car. She called police on her cell phone and drove away.

Broadnax was arrested on suspicion of carjacking, false imprisonment and being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm, police said.

He refused to talk to investigators.
