The National Institute for Emergency Medical Training (NIEMT – St. Louis, MO) has introduced online CPR training combined with objective and measurable "hands-on" skills testing and validation using Ambu SmartMan’s Intelligent Training Manikin.

NIEMT currently conducts a fully comprehensive online CPR Certification Course based on nationally recognized curriculum, covering a wide range of topics including: medical and legal concerns, risk factors for heart disease and stroke, steps to successful revival of a victim, CPR for adult, child and infant victims, AED training, obstructed airway training, as well as two-rescuer CPR.

The online testing component of the course is a 25-question theory exam. The practical hands-on skills test is performed on Ambu SmartMan Intelligent CPR Skills Validation manikin. Trainees are required to achieve a minimum 70% score on both the written theory and the hands-on portions, only then can a certificate be issued. The trainee will receive a valid CPR card within two weeks of passing, which is good for two years.

Ambu SmartMan intelligent manikin compares real-time performance against the current guidelines, including; 30:2 CPR, Hands-Only, Rescue Breathing, 1 & 2 Person Compression and Ventilation CPR & other standards. SmartMan users receive a relative percentage score (out of 100%) indicating their skill level and a real-time detailed report is produced.

According to NIEMT’s CEO, Douglas Woods, "We decided to combine online training with Ambu SmartMan to validate skills because it works. Research has shown that these lifesaving procedures can be taught effectively in as little as 20 minutes. Having skills validation finally lets us to know exactly how each trainee performed, allowing for immediate improvement, which leads to more lives saved".
