DAMASCUS, Ore. --

A water rescue team helped a man off the roof of his pickup truck Tuesday after he crashed into the Clackamas River.

State police said 57-year-old Richard Sain's pickup drifted off Highway 224, crashed into trees and a fence and went down an 80-foot embankment into the river.

Sain was unable to unlatch his seatbelt and he crawled out the window onto the top of the pickup. A Clackamas County water rescue team found him sitting on the roof in the river just off the highway near Damascus. Crews brought the man aboard their rescue boat and then took him to the Carver boat ramp so he could be taken to a local hospital, said Detective Jim Strovink of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

The crashed vehicle remained in the water at noon, more than two hours after the crash. Strovink said the crash did not appear to have any environmental impact to the river.

Sheriff's marine officers helped secure tow hooks and cables to the truck so it could be towed up the embankment. The highway was briefly closed to allow for emergency and tow vehicles to remove the truck.

State police suspect Sain experienced a medical problem before he drove off the highway.
