TITUSVILLE, Fla. --
The estranged husband of a certified nursing assistant who was fatally shot at a local hospital early Monday morning has been charged with first degree murder, the Titusville Police Department said.Video: Garvin-Williams' Family Reacts
The gunfire erupted in the parking lot of the Parish Medical Center on North Washington Avenue in Brevard County just before 7 a.m.
Yolanda Garvin-Williams, 30, was carried to the emergency room of the hospital to be treated for multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting.
Garvin-Williams' estranged husband, Jeremiah Williams, 38, also known as Jeremiah Berry, was arrested Monday afternoon, according to the Titusville Police Department. Records show that a restraining order was filed against Williams on May 5 involving domestic violence with children, but in a hearing on May 14, a judge dismissed the case when Garvin-Williams failed to appear at the hearing.
Police said Garvin-Williams had called the police as recent as a week ago saying Williams was threatening her and their children and had broken into her apartment.
"I can tell you I read the statement from the victim and I read the report, and there was nothing in that report that would even hint at the level of violence that took place here this morning," Lt. Todd Hutchinson said.
Garvin-Williams' father said she and her children had moved into an apartment a month ago, and that Williams had abused her throughout their nine years of marriage.
"Everything was his way or no way pretty much, and I guess after she moved out he wasn't going to have his way with her any more so he just couldn't handle it," Morris Garvin said.
Garvin-Williams is survived by four children, ages 9 to 13.
"He's been planning it for a while," Garvin-Williams' stepmother Irene Garvin said. "He finally did it. He took her away from those kids, everybody that loved her because she wanted to be free. She's free now. She's definitely free from him."
The Marion County Sheriff's Office said Williams fled to Marion County after the incident. The sheriff's office confirmed that Williams was driving his wife's car, a Dodge Intrepid, when he was spotted on north U.S. Highway 441. Deputies used stop sticks to stop Williams' vehicle. The Marion County Sheriff's Office arrested Williams, and after he complained of chest pains, he was taken to Munroe Regional Medical Center where hospital officials said he stayed overnight for observation.
When Williams is discharged from the hospital, he'll go to the Marion County Jail and eventually Titusville police will come to transport him back to Brevard County.
Following the shooting, video from Chopper 2 showed family and friends mourning in the hospital parking lot.
According to a spokesperson for the hospital, the emergency room was on lockdown for a few hours during the incident, but has reopened. No one else was injured.
"I commend the security officers who were on scene almost immediately, and the security that is patrolling on site constantly, 24-7. We also have security cameras in the parking lot 24-7. We are assisting TPD currently with that investigation and again that lockdown was just part of protocol and at no time were any risks to patients or care partners inside," hospital spokeswoman Natalie Sellers said.
